# Recording

> How meeting sessions are recorded, how long recordings are retained, and how to delete recording media.

A meeting session records automatically. Point the bot at a meeting and the recording is produced alongside the transcript -- there is nothing to switch on.

That is why `POST /v2/meeting_sessions` has no recording parameter and no action controls it: the session's three actions are [`speak`, `stop_speaking`](https://developers.telnyx.com/docs/meeting/control/speak) and [`send_chat`](https://developers.telnyx.com/docs/meeting/control/chat). Recording is not something you start, stop, or configure.

What that leaves you:

* The session's `recording` field reports whether the session is recording.
* Recordings are retained free for the first 7 days, then billed per recording media hour -- see [Recording Retention](https://developers.telnyx.com/docs/meeting/pricing.md#recording-retention).
* `DELETE /v2/meeting_sessions/{id}/recording_media` removes the media and stops retention billing. The session, its transcript, events and artifacts are kept. See [Delete Recording Media](https://developers.telnyx.com/docs/meeting/collect-results.md#delete-recording-media).
* A [digital avatar's](https://developers.telnyx.com/docs/meeting/digital-avatars.md) camera video is not included in the recording; the bot's audio is.
